As the Sens get ready for tonight's contest against the Carolina Hurricanes, we caught up with Chris Kelly to talk about the improvements to the penalty kill, rebounding emotionally after Edmonton and more...
On the continued improvement of the penalty kill:
There are always areas for improvement in every aspect of the game including the kill. They always say that your best penalty killer has to be you goalie and they were. You try to limit their chances and put them in situations where you prefer them to be as opposed to them having their way. I thought we stayed connected, we forced at the proper times and made sure we got the clears down. And that's important, when you give teams second and third opportunities when you could get the puck down that's a lot of times where it comes back to haunt you.
On building off the positives from the 3-game western road trip:
You look at the month of October and we're 5-3 with a new coach, new systems and some new faces. Some of those games where we came out on the wrong side I thought we had opportunities to win them and that's all you can ask for. You're not going to be perfect every night but as long as you're working and working in the right way and trying to execute the system properly then that's a positive thing.
On progress and results from implementing Guy Boucher's system:
I think it's been great. You're starting to see guys buy in to this system. Right from your top offensive guys right down to your checking forwards to the stay-at-home defensemen which is a great thing to see. When you see everyone on the same page and trying to execute the game plan it's always a positive thing.
On resetting after Sunday's emotional game against the Oilers:
That's part of the gig. That's kind of what you sign up for is the highs and the lows and I think you just have to stay on an even keel for the most part. Some nights it's harder than others and that was an emotional game in Edmonton but we have to rebound. We're playing a good Carolina team that has been playing well. Every point is important. Points in October, points in November are just as important as points in March and April. You never want to come back and have a lull.
