What a way to wind up a season for the Ottawa Senators women's intermediate AA team.
The Senators dumped the Toronto Aeros 5-3 in the gold-medal game at the Provincial Women's Hockey League Final Four tournament, held at the Magna Centre in Newmarket. Earlier, the Senators blanked the Durham Lightning 1-0 in a tense semifinal match.
It was a stunning finish for an Ottawa team which had finished the regular season in fifth spot in the 18-team league. The Senators then needed to win playoff series against Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge to reach the Final Four for a second straight year.
The championship was a fitting farewell for 11 Senators players moving on to play university hockey in Canada or the United States. That group includes Ottawa's Isabel Menard and Talia Menard; Stefanie McKeough, Margaux Sharp and Bryanna Farris of Carleton Place; Kanata's Mackenzie Thurston; Cobina Delaney of Stittsville; North Gower's Brittney Perkins; Metcalfe's Jenna Hendrikx; Stephanie Plourde of Smiths Falls, and Cassie Seguin of Ingleside.
