OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators (@Senators) general manager Bryan Murray announced today that the club has signed defenceman Thomas Chabot to a three-year entry-level contract.
Chabot, 18, was the Senators first, first-round pick (18th overall) at last June’s NHL Draft in Sunrise, Fla. He established new major junior career-highs with 41 points (12 goals, 29 assists) and 62 penalty minutes while appearing in all but four of his team’s 70 regular-season games in his second full campaign with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Saint John Sea Dogs in 2014-15.
The 6-2, 185-pound native of Ste-Marie-de-Beauce, Que., helped Canada earn a bronze medal at the 2014 IIHF Under-18 World Junior Championship in Switzerland where he tied for the tournament scoring lead among defencemen with five points (one goal, four assists) while appearing in each of Canada’s seven games.
Prior to participating in the Senators’ rookie and main training camps earlier this month, Chabot was an invitee to Hockey Canada’s National Teams’ Summer Showcase which was held in August in Calgary. Chabot also recorded two assists and a plus/minus rating of plus-three over three pre-season contests with the Senators.
Returned by the Senators to Saint John earlier today, Chabot is likely to make his QMJHL season debut on Friday when the Sea Dogs host the Gatineau Olympiques.
