OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators (@Senators) announced today the club has signed free agent defenceman Macoy Erkamps to a three-year entry-level contract. Erkamps is currently playing in his fifth Western Hockey League season and second with the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Erkamps, 21, scored 13 goals and added 58 assists for 71 points, while recording 64 penalty minutes and a plus-47 rating in 71 games with the Wheat Kings this season. His 71 points were the second-highest total among league defencemen and his 58 assists were league-best. He is also serving as Brandon’s team captain this season.
“We are happy to have Macoy join the Senators organization,” said Senators general manager Bryan Murray.” He is a player we’ve had an eye on over the course of his junior career and we’ve watched him develop into one of the WHL’s top defencemen this season. He’s a talented, competitive guy whose game took a big jump this season.”
The 6-0, 198-pound, native of Delta, B.C., was an invitee to the Senators’ 2013 summer development camp. Following the 2015-16 regular season, Erkamps was named Brandon’s most community-minded, top graduating player and also won the award for most inspirational player, named after the team’s former trainer, Rob Stouffer.
