OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators (@Senators) are proud to announce that their partnership with the Province of Ontario, Hydro Ottawa and Ephesus Lighting on a new energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lighting system at Canadian Tire Centre has provided the organization immediate benefits, both to the in-game experience and off of the ice with energy conservation.
“The Ephesus Lighting system not only improves our fans ability to enjoy the game by seeing the players and action more clearly, but it has been beneficial to our organization in a number of other important ways,” said Senators president Cyril Leeder. “Working with the Province of Ontario and Hydro Ottawa, we have been able to make great strides to conserve the amount energy required to light an arena of this size. These partnerships have also allowed the organization to operate in a more environmentally friendly manner. Additionally, Canadian Tire Centre has been able to recognize savings due to the reduced requirement for energy.”
Installed prior to the start of the 2014-15 National Hockey League season, Canadian Tire Centre has replaced its metal halide system with Ephesus’ Arena 300 (watt) and Arena 600 (watt) Series lights. While reducing the number of fixtures by more than one-third, the Ephesus Lighting solution has dramatically increased light to 225-foot candles (more than a 50 per cent improvement) and has yielded a projected energy savings of more than 70 per cent.
“Ontario is putting conservation first. It’s one of our cleanest and most cost-effective energy resources and it is one way businesses can reduce their energy bills. saveONenergy FOR BUSINESS programs help businesses save energy and money,” said Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli.
The Province of Ontario continues to be a North American energy conservation leader. Ontario’s conservation efforts are helping individuals and businesses to become more active in reducing their energy consumption. It is estimated that Ontarians have conserved about 8.6 terawatt-hours of electricity between 2005 and 2013 – more than the power used by the City of Ottawa last year. The new lighting system is expected to save Canadian Tire Centre more than 1 million kWh of energy each year, or the equivalent of 1,745 60-watt light bulbs running 24-hours a day, seven day a week.
“This particular project and its success clearly demonstrate the type of benefits that businesses, large or small, can experience by partnering with Hydro Ottawa, and taking advantage of the provincial saveONenergy incentives,” added Bryce Conrad, president and chief executive officer at Hydro Ottawa. “Thanks to the Ottawa Senators and Canadian Tire Centre for championing our conservation messages and programs so that customers and Sens fans alike can experience the impact and beauty of this state-of-the-art energy-efficient lighting system.”
Ephesus Lighting has created LED lighting solutions for nearly 100 indoor and outdoor sports and entertainment venues across North America. The move to LED for the 2014-15 NHL season makes it the first NHL venue to be lit with Ephesus LED lights.
