OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators (@Senators) announced today that the club has loaned defenceman Mikael Wikstrand to Färjestad BK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) for the purpose of allowing him to play in Champions Hockey League group stage games in Europe prior to the start of the Senators respective rookie and training camps in September. Färjestad is one of several SHL clubs that will participate in the second edition of Europe’s premier hockey club championship beginning on Aug. 20.
“Permitting Mikael to play in highly competitive games this early in the year should enable him to come to both our rookie and main training camps with a leg up on some of the players against which he will compete for ice time,” said Senators assistant general manager Randy Lee. “Given that we have spent considerable time investing in Mikael’s development, we believe this loan will provide additional benefit to both him and ultimately to the Senators.”
Ottawa’s seventh-round selection in the 2012 NHL Draft (196th overall), Wikstrand’s loan to Färjestad will be terminated prior to the start of the team’s annual rookie camp on Sept. 11. The Senators rookie team roster will be released on Aug. 27.
