OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators (@Senators) announced today the launch of a new program, the Sens Junior Skills Challenge, presented by Canadian Tire. This program, open to atom and peewee minor hockey players who are registered with the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association, the Ottawa Women’s Hockey Association and Hockey Outaouais, is aimed at minor hockey players in an effort to improve their skills and development.
Minor hockey team coaches are encouraged to download the Sens Junior Skills Challenge booklet at www.ottawasenators.com/juniorskills and then run their own players through the five skills challenges and events during an on-ice session. The coaches would then submit their scoresheets to the Senators through the same website. Top players from each team that submits a scoresheet will qualify directly for the championships on March 12 at Canadian Tire Centre.
Minor hockey players can also register as an individual online at www.ottawasenators.com/juniorskills to participate in one of the program’s regional finals, which will be held on March 7, 8, and 9 at three different locations throughout the Ottawa-region with the top participants qualifying for the March 12 Junior Skills Challenge championships.
Sens Skills, presented by Sport Chek, will see the Senators split into two squads to compete head-to-head in various skill events including the fastest skater and hardest shot. Senators’ alternate captains, Chris Neil and Chris Phillips, are teaming-up to take on a squad led by Senators captain Jason Spezza. Senators defenceman, Cody Ceci, a graduate of a similar junior skills program that the Senators hosted in past seassons, is scheduled to participate in his first Sens Skills since his participation as a minor hockey player in 2003.
On behalf of Sport Chek, the Senators will donate this year’s net proceeds to the Ottawa Senators Foundation in support of the Sens RINK Project.
