OTTAWA - Earlier today, Ottawa Senators (@Senators) owner Eugene Melnyk (@MelnykEugene) hosted more than 100 local children at Canadian Tire Centre as part of the 12th annual Eugene Melnyk Skate for Kids.
The group of children from Blossom Park Public School and St. Elizabeth Catholic School in Ottawa were welcomed to Canadian Tire Centre by Melnyk before taking to the ice for a special afternoon skate.
Melnyk, along with Santa Claus, members of the Ottawa Senators Alumni, Spartacat and special guests, presented each participant with early Christmas presents, including a Senators jersey, a helmet and a brand new pair of skates – all gifts from the Senators owner.
“The tradition of the Skate for Kids has become as important to me as it is to spend Christmas with my loved ones,” said Senators owner Eugene Melnyk. “This last year has been difficult for both myself and my family, but maybe the greatest gift from everything we’ve been through is that I’m able to step back and take even more joy in seeing the happiness in these children.”
Many of the children who participated in today’s Skate for Kids will have received their first pair of hockey skates, then used them to skate on the same National Hockey League ice as their Senators heroes.
Since the inaugural Eugene Melnyk Skate for Kids in 2004, more than 1,200 helmets and pairs of skates have been distributed to youth throughout the region.
