Senators forward Josh Hennessy is happy with his performance during last night's 5-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. As a grueling training camp featuring nine pre-season games comes to an end, the 21-year-old native of Brockton, Mass., says he felt energized last night.
"I started off with a pretty good training camp, then I started to slow down for a couple of games because of fatigue. I didn't play a game since early April, and having four games in six days, that was my first experience of something like that at this level. Last night I felt that I played with a little more jump."
Acquired in a three-team trade on July 10 between Ottawa, the Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks, Hennessy spoke about his feelings on having his rights dealt for the first time in his career.
"I think it was something I took pretty well. I thought maybe there would be one spot available here, and in that sense, I was excited to come to Ottawa because they're one of the best teams in the league. Everybody has treated me very well here and made me feel comfortable. I'm loving it so far."
While Hennessy has been held pointless in five pre-season games to date, the youngster believes the Senators coaching staff and management might be looking for something else from him right now.
"(The Senators) are going to score enough goals, and I don't think they're looking for that out of a rookie like me. My goal (coming into training camp) was to come in and show my versatility, bring some intensity, show I can skate, and that I can be trusted as a player. I want to leave a good first impression."
Last season with the American Hockey League's Cleveland Barons, the centreman scored 24 goals and 63 points in 80 games during his first professional hockey season. In four junior hockey seasons with the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Hennessy collected 291 points, including 128 goals. He was captain of the Remparts in his final season in 2004-05, and finished eighth in the Canadian Hockey League with 85 points.
