Inside the Senate will be taking a look at 40 prospects ahead of the Entry Draft on June 30. Up next is J.T. Compher...
In each draft class there a handful of can-do-it-all players and, in 2013, you’d be hard pressed to find a player who fits that mould better than J.T. Compher.
Compher was the captain of the US NTDP in 2012-13 and established himself as a key cog and clear leader of the team. In 21 USHL games this past season, Compher was a point-per-game player for the team, registering 24 in 21 games. He continued his solid play for the USA in the World U18 tournament where he put up three goals and four assists in seven games en route to a silver medal.
Solid production is a key reason why Compher enters the draft as the premier prospect from the US NTDP. However, his process to earn that production what jumps out at you. Compher is a classic high energy, three zone type of player who hounds opponents all over the ice. His skating, shot, puck handling and instincts are all well above average and, when coupled with his effort level, make him a very difficult opponent.
The detractor from Compher’s game going forward is his size. As a very physical player who likes to mix it up and agitate in dirty areas of the ice, building his strength has to be a focus. He is a very strong player for his age and experience level, but if his style is to project into the professional ranks he will need to develop a corresponding strength level or he won’t be able to sustain that type of play.
With his skillset and competitiveness Compher should make a quality pro, though his ceiling may not be as high as others in this area of the draft. Realistically, it is unlikely that he become more than a quality two-way player who makes his home on the second line. While a top six player in and of itself is a great asset in the NHL, it will likely diminish his stock with teams unwilling to reach on players that don’t have that home run potential.
Expect Compher to be selected at some point in the second round.
