Ottawa native and Sens prospect Corey Cowick will make his pre-season debut tonight in Toronto when he suits up for the Sens. Last year, the 2009 sixth round pick had a solid year in Binghamton, recording 16 goals in 72 games for the Baby Sens. Today, he was praised by Coach MacLean as the most fit athlete in camp and prepares to put on the big club's jersey for the first time in 2013.
Here's what he had to say...
On getting into the lineup:
I'm excited to be able to showcase myself in a game — a pre-season game where it's a full game and not just 25 running time. Putting the jersey on is obviously a huge honour being from Ottawa, and it means that much more when you're playing a team like the Leafs that you know the history there, you know the rivalry and you want to prove you're the best in Ontario.
It has gone well, I think I've done a lot of things I wanted to do here and I'm just waiting for an opportunity and hoping to take advantage of it, that's all I can do. For the most part things have been good.
On building on last season:
I think my game, it starts off keeping it simple, using my body, fast, getting a lot of hits in from the get-go and I think my skill takes over after that. Like I said, keeping it simple is the most important thing for me, being a big body, getting hits in there and then everything else comes after.
On the nerves:
The first two shifts will probably be a little bit tough there, trying to stay calm, but I think after that there's a good group of guys here, I've worked all summer with Neil and he'll try to keep me a little bit calm from the get-go but obviously it's going to be emotional for sure, but you've got to play hockey. You've got to prove you deserve to be out there. It'll wear off pretty quick and I'll be back to my game.
On if it turns into Toronto's Sunday night game vs Buffalo:
I don't think there will be too many of those (line brawls) but you know, if we get the win that's all that matters.
