Claude Giroux was named the NHL First star of the Week for the week ending Jan. 29

The National Hockey League announced today that Claude has been named the First Star of the week after compiling four goals and three assists for seven points while helping the team go a perfect 3-0-0.
In his first season with the Ottawa Senators, Giroux sits second on the team in scoring with 47 points, just behind captain, Brady Tkachuk. Additionally, his 47 points are good for the 10th most by a right winger this season.
Looking to right the ship following a disappointing loss to the Winnipeg Jets, Giroux opened the week by connecting on both goals in the Senators 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders. First, he provided the primary assist on Shane Pinto's opening goal at the 4:12 mark of the first period. He followed that up with a goal of his own at the 16:32 mark of the second period, which proved to be the game winning goal.
Over this weekend's division rival back-to-back games against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens Giroux left his mark with three goals and two assists for five points. Giroux first provided the primary assist on Derick Brassard's power play goal to make the game 3-2 against Toronto. Then came perhaps one of Giroux's smoothest goals of the season as he intercepted a pass at centre ice, skated into the attacking zone, put on a toe drag and put it home over Igor Samsonov's blocker.
Against Montreal Giroux provided the lone assist on Alex DeBrincat's opening goal and then followed that up with a pair of goals himself.
Through 49 games, Giroux has already surpassed his goals, assists and point total from this point last season.
Giroux through 49 games:
2022-23: 47 points (19G - 28A)
2021-22: 39 points (17G - 22A)
Following a day off, the Senators return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Montreal to cap off a home-and-home series before the All-Star break.
