After the first on-ice session for Development Camp wrapped up we had a chance to catch up with Nick Paul to talk Day 1, his new leadership role and more...
On coming into camp in shape:
I usually lose a lot of weight during the season. I come in to the season usually pretty big and then my muscle tone dies down. I still keep my strength but I slim out a little bit with all the cardio and not being in the gym so much. I put on a little bit of weight this spring working with Schwartz and my trainer back home to keep lean and keep fit.
On his physical testing results:
My results were good. I always strive to do better though. Good isn't good enough so I'm always looking to get better and come back to the main camp even better.
On getting back on the ice at Development Camp:
During practice today I think guys were just getting some of the kinks out. Pucks were bouncing over sticks and the ice was getting a little choppy but for the first day it went pretty well. You get to know the new guys and new coaches so I think today was about getting to know everyone and working the kinks out. Tomorrow we have to be a lot better.
On taking on a leadership role during Development Camp:
The last couple of years I've been coming in and I've been all ears just trying to soak up everything. This year I have to pass along what I've learned to the new guys and help guide them to the right path. I played a couple NHL games and had Chris Neil as a mentor and a lot of guys who have some games under their belt so whatever I learned up there I'm just trying to pass along to the younger guys. I'm not trying to be bossy or tell people what to do...I'm just trying to help people who want to learn. I'm just passing along the information that I've learned and that has helped me and hopefully it helps them too.
