Regin, 22, was Ottawa’s second third-round pick (87th overall) in the 2004 entry draft. The native of Herning, Denmark, recently completed his third season with Timra IK of the Swedish Elite League, recording a career-high 31 points in 55 games. His 12 goals, 19 assists and 36 penalty minutes were also career bests.
Regin has represented his country in each of the last four world championships, most recently in Quebec City in May. In six games during the 2008 tournament, he scored two goals and added an assist while recording four penalty minutes, as Denmark ranked 12th out of 16 countries. In Denmark’s last meeting of the championship against Belarus, Regin tied the game with 38 seconds remaining of regular time and then scored the game-winner at 2:11 of the sudden death overtime.
Only two players born in Denmark have been selected in the entry draft since Peter Regin in 2004, and only three Danes have worn NHL jerseys: Poul Peter Popiel, Frans Nielsen and Jannik Hansen.
