Club also signs Brennan Evans to a one-year contract
OTTAWA - After six pre-season games, and two more remaining this weekend against the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators reduced their roster to 23 players by assigning right-winger Patrick Eaves and goaltender Billy Thompson to the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League (AHL). The club also designated centre Steve Martins and defenceman Lance Ward for assignment to Binghamton pending they clear waivers Saturday at noon.
The Senators' roster stands at two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 14 forwards.
The Senators go into their final weekend of training camp facing the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday at the Corel Centre (7 p.m.) and then travel to Montreal's Bell Centre for the return meeting on Sunday (7 p.m.).
Eaves, 21, had three assists in four pre-season games. Thompson, 23, saw action in the pre-season against Pittsburgh no Sept. 24, allowing one goal on 17 shots in 27:31 of play.
Martins, 33, had a goal in three pre-season games, and the 27-year old Ward did not register a point in five games.
The club also announced it signed defenceman Brennan Evans, who was assigned to Binghamton on Sept. 21, to a one-year contract. Evans, 23, played in one pre-season game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sept. 23. In 2004-05 with the Lowell Lock Monsters, the Camrose, Alta. native recorded seven assists and 79 penalty minutes in 51 regular season games and added two penalty minutes in five playoff games.
