The Ottawa Senators today assigned defenceman Matt Carkner
to the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators. Carkner must first clear waivers by noon on Monday (Oct. 22).
The 26-year-old played in the Senators’ first pre-season game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Sept. 18. He had one five-minute fighting major, but suffered a broken left hand and hasn’t practised with the team since then.
Carkner signed with the Senators in July 2007 after spending last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. In 75 games with the Penguins, he scored six goals and added 24 assist for 30 points while recording 167 penalty minutes.
