OTTAWA - Each year Canada's six NHL teams and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) celebrate our national game across the country on Hockey Day in Canada. This year, on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, the Ottawa Senators and Hockey Day in Canada want to celebrate those individuals who make our game, and Hockey Country, great. CBC host Ron MacLean will kick off the 13 1/2 hour-long telecast at noon EDT, live from this year's winning host site of Nelson, B.C. CBC will televise its traditional triple-header broadcast with the Senators hosting the Montreal Canadiens at 2 p.m., the Vancouver Canucks visiting the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7 p.m. and wrapping up with the Edmonton Oilers in Calgary to take on the Flames at 10 p.m.
The Ottawa Senators Hockey Club invites all TEAM Hockey Country members to nominate a local volunteer and/or team in your minor hockey community who gives their heart and soul for the great Canadian pastime. This individual can be an active coach, parent, manager, hockey administrator or a volunteer who goes out of their way to help make your association, team or arena extraordinary. Teams may be nominated for their exceptional efforts giving back to their community, overcoming insurmountable odds to succeed on or off the ice or achieving a significant accomplishment.
To submit a nomination for a volunteer or team in your community, individuals across Ottawa and Gatineau are encouraged to draft a 250-word letter that outlines the extraordinary efforts and accomplishments of their exceptional volunteer or team.
All entries will be reviewed before a panel of judges, with one volunteer entry each from Ottawa and Gatineau and one team submission being awarded the grand prize.
Along with a volunteer from Montreal, the selected volunteers from Ottawa and Gatineau will drop the ceremonial puck prior to the Senators' home game against the Montreal Canadiens on Hockey Day in Canada on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007. In addition, each selected volunteer will be awarded two tickets to watch the Hockey Day in Canada game from the Senators' club-level suite.
The winning team will attend the Senators team practice on Friday, Jan. 12, as well as receive replica Ottawa Senators jerseys to wear at the Senators home game on Hockey Day in Canada. Finally, the selected team will be featured on ice during the pre-game ceremonies and will stand behind OPP constable Lyndon Slewidge during the signing of the national anthem.
Deadline for submissions is Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006. Please fax a copy to 613-599-0156, e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org or drop off at the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club office Gate 2. Please ensure the submissions are directed to the attention of Shannon Donovan.
