The Ottawa Senators today recalled defenceman Jared Cowen
from his Western Hockey League club, the Spokane Chiefs.
Cowen, 19, was the Senators’ first-round pick (ninth overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and signed an entry-level contract with the Senators on Feb. 3. He recently concluded his third full season with the Chiefs, who were defeated four games to three by the Portland Winter Hawks in a WHL quarter-final playoff series that ended March 31. In 181 career WHL games, Cowen has recorded 19 goals, 52 assists and 183 penalty minutes. He has also added two goals and five assists in 34 playoff contests.
The 6-5, 215-pound defenceman earned a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, which was held in Regina and Saskatoon. He appeared in six games for Canada, recording one assist and two penalty minutes while concluding the tournament with a plus-4 rating.
A native of Allan, Sask., Cowen is scheduled to make his NHL debut with the Senators this evening, when Ottawa visits the Tampa Bay Lightning at 7:30 p.m.
