OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager John Muckler today announced the re-signing of centre Jason Spezza to a multi-year agreement.
Spezza, 23, had a career year in 2005-06, recording 19 goals and 71 assists for 90 points in his third NHL season. His 71 assists set a new franchise record, as he finished second only to Hart Trophy winner Joe Thornton (96) in that category. The centreman was also chosen as an alternate to represent Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.
Spezza led the Senators in playoff scoring in 2006, collecting five goals and nine assists in 10 games. The Toronto native tied Martin Havlat and Dany Heatley for most points in a series (10) in Round 1 vs. Tampa Bay, while his four-assist effort at Tampa on April 25 set a new franchise mark for one game.
In 179 career games with Ottawa, Spezza has recorded 48 goals, 118 assists, 166 points and 112 penalty minutes.
