– The Ottawa Senators Hockey Club today unveiled their new face of the future as they introduced their updated primary logo — a modernized version of the team’s former third-jersey logo. The familiar Roman soldier has been given a bolder, more determined “game face” — a symbol of the team’s strength and determination.
The introduction of the updated logo comes following a strong run of 10 consecutive playoff appearances and the team’s first Eastern Conference championship in 2007.
“The new look for the Ottawa Senators not only recognizes the team’s past success factors, it builds momentum for a new season,” says Eugene Melnyk, owner of the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club. “This is the fighting spirit we plan to bring to the ice in the 2007–08 season and beyond.”
Designed by Ottawa’s Acart Communications, the club’s updated primary logo has been redrawn with bolder, crisper lines. The eyes of the Roman soldier now stare more sharply and directly at the viewer, with all facial features made more chiselled, tough and angular. The colours have been simplified, with no flesh tone in the face to create a starker contrast. The helmet and its plume have been made more substantial and better defined to frame the face. The top of the cape has been also been made more recognizable, with visible folds. The gold semicircle with laurel leaves, which anchors the logo, has been reduced in size to give more prominence to the warrior while increasing its association with the letter “O”.
The introduction of the updated Senators logo comes in conjunction with the launch of the new Rbk EDGE Uniform System™, adopted League-wide for the 2007–08 NHL season. Following more than two years of research and development, new uniforms are being brought in to enhance player performance and increase player protection and safety. The NHL and Reebok worked together to develop a new uniform system that uses improved materials that are more breathable, more resistant to water absorption and offer a greater range of motion.
The sleek, new uniforms will see the Senators feature the primary logo on the front of both their home and road jerseys, strengthening the team’s on-ice brand by presenting a more consistent look. The club’s home jersey will be red with white flashes on the sides and lower sleeves, and black under the arms. The away jersey will be white with red flashes on the sides and lower sleeves, and black under the arms. Both uniforms will also feature a new shoulder patch with a retro “O” symbol on a striped background, a tribute to the original Ottawa Senators as the modern-era team celebrates its 15th anniversary on the ice. There will be no third jersey for the Senators in 2007-08.
The club’s former primary logo, which was a profile view of the Roman soldier, has also been updated and will now become the club’s secondary logo. The secondary logo will appear on some classic Senators merchandise.
The Senators new game jerseys will be on sale exclusively at Sensations, the club’s official store at Scotiabank Place, from Sept. 14 to 20. Fans can pre-order their new Rbk Edge jersey by downloading this order form.
General retail at participating stores will commence Sept. 21. Meanwhile, all other Senators merchandise featuring the updated logo, including t-shirts, ball caps, flags and more, is on sale now at Sensations and all participating retailers.
The Senators will open their 15th NHL season when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the Air Canada Centre. Senators fans in Ottawa will have their first chance to see the club skate in their new uniforms when they host the Washington Capitals at Scotiabank Place on Thursday, Sept. 20.
