- Ottawa Senators defenceman Filip Kuba
underwent surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles to correct a herniated disk in his back. He will be re-evaluated as the playoffs progress to determine his availability to return to action this season.
In his second year with the Senators, the 33-year old has played in 53 games this season, recording three goals, 25 assists and 28 penalty minutes.
Since having played against the New York Rangers on March 2, Kuba has missed 15 of the team’s last 16 games. He played most recently during a 6-3 Senators loss to the Thrashers in Atlanta on March 18. Kuba has missed a total 27 games to injury this season – five in October (lower body), four in January (upper body) and the current 15 games.
Acquired in a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning with Alexandre Picard and a 2009 first-round draft pick (obtained from San Jose) for Andrej Meszaros on Aug. 29, 2008, Kuba signed a three-year contract in March 2009. Over 10 NHL seasons, he has recorded 61 goals, 214 assists and 295 penalty minutes in 655 games.
