Animated GIFts: Methot's season highlights

by Craig Medaglia / Ottawa Senators

In honour of Sens defenceman Marc Methot skating in his 500th career NHL game this past Sunday, we take a look back at some of his very best highlights from this season in the form of GIFs...

1. October 18th, 2015 vs the Calgary Flames

You had to know there were going to be a few earth-shattering hits on this list. That's kind of his thing. We start off with a beauty as Methot tracks Flames forward Josh Jooris as he crosses the blueline and forces him towards the boards. As soon as he has him penned in, he steps up and absolutely buries Jooris. They can't always be hip-checks but...

2. November 5th, 2015 vs the Winnipeg Jets

...sometimes they can be hip-checks too. It's pretty much his calling card and something I had the chance to speak with him about last season. "It can bail you out of a play if a forward gets a step on you," said Methot discussing his knack for the hip check. "People start to know throughout the league that you're capable of it so they'll start chipping it by you but there's always the odd player that has never seen it before." In this scenario, Drew Stafford is the player that should have known better as Methot lets him get a step before popping him into the end-boards with a well timed hip.

3. February 6th, 2016 vs the Toronto Maple Leafs

For a big, rugged defenceman, Methot has shown some serious touch this season. Here he picks a good spot to jump up into the play and finds himself on a 2-on-1 with Zack Smith. The Leafs' defender does a good job of trying to eliminate Methot's space and passing options but he drastically underestimated the big guy's ability to saucer a pass on the move as he drops it directly on Smith's tape in the slot.

4. February 25th, 2016 vs the Vancouver Canucks

This GIF doesn't show the full play but Methot basically goes end-to-end here against the Canucks and shows off a variety of skills in the process. After initially ducking a Canucks forechecker in his own end, Methot turns on the jets and rips through the neutral zone. He powers through a check along the wall and then pulls the Canucks defenceman with him below the goal line before threading a pass to a trailing Bobby Ryan. This is the type of play that we routinely see from Methot's two-time Norris Trophy winning partner.

5. March 3rd, 2016 vs the Tampa Bay Lightning

We've seen Methot unload slapshots from the point before but he displays a completely different set of offensive instincts here against the Lightning. Methot sees the Tampa forwards are slow getting back so he sneaks into the slot and quickly snaps a rocket just under the crossbar. It's his first goal in nearly 3 months but he wouldn't have to wait nearly as long to find the back of the net again...

6. March 5th, 2016 vs the Toronto Maple Leafs

With the Sens trailing 2-1 in the third period against the Maple Leafs, Methot pinches down from the point just as a loose puck pops out into the slot. Even though he finds himself on his backhand, he quickly adjusts with a shoulder dip to gain the necessary power to hit the open side of the Toronto net and ties the game. This goal marks the first time that Methot has scored goals in back-to-back games in his NHL career. Oh...and the Sens went on to beat the Leafs for the third straight time this season.
