Four Buffalo Sabres prospects are representing their countries in this year’s IIHF World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia: Mikhail Grigorenko and Andrey Makarov (Russia); Joel Armia (Finland) and Jake McCabe (United States). Check back to each day during the tournament (December 26, 2012 to January 5, 2013) as we track their progress.

Wed., December 26
Grigorenko/Makarov: Russia defeated Slovakia 3-2 in overtime. Grigorenko picked up an assist on Russia’s first goal, took a team-high five shots and won the offensive zone faceoff in overtime that led directly to Albert Yarullin’s game winner. Grigorenko was also 11-5 overall on faceoffs. Makarov served as the backup goaltender to Andrei Vasilevski.

Armia: Finland easily handled Latvia 5-1. Armia picked up a pair of assists in the win, along with a two minor penalties. He also took three shots on goal.
