Last year the Buffalo Sabres and National Fuel’s Conservation Incentive Program partnered to form the Sabres Green Team, with a mission to create programming that will help everyone in Western New York reduce their environmental footprint.
Now the Green Team has joined with the National Energy Education Development Project (NEED) to offer a new, free and exciting program for teachers at the fifth through 12th-grade level to help their students to become Energy Detectives.
The NEED program includes teacher-tested, hands-on classroom kits that teach students about energy efficiency, conservation and energy sources. Participating teachers will be provided with Home Energy Efficiency Kits to send home with students to share with their families.
Together, the students and their families install energy efficiency and conservation measures, including: shower flow bags, outlet gasket insulators, faucet aerators, water-saving showerheads, and other tools. Materials provide structure for students to work with their families to save energy and integrate their efforts with a classroom activity.
To further support the classroom activity, the Buffalo Sabres will be offering 10 participating classes a visit with Sabretooth where students can share what they have learned. In addition, each participating teacher will be asked to select one top Energy Detective from his/her class to be entered into a drawing to win a school visit by Sabres forward Paul Gaustad.
The grand prize winner will also receive the opportunity to attend a Sabres game at HSBC Arena, and attend the post-game press conference with head coach Lindy Ruff.
As part of its support the efforts of the Green Team and during their first of seven Green Game sponsorships during the season, National Fuel will distribute 5,000 Home Energy Conservation kits following Thursday’s game vs. Tampa Bay.
It’s easy for teachers to get involved in this program. The first step is to attend one of the upcoming teacher-training workshops.
Thanks to National Fuel’s sponsorship, there is no cost to attend the workshop. Breakfast and lunch are provided. Substitute costs will be reimbursed to school districts and substitute reimbursement forms will be provided at the workshop.
To be eligible, a school must be in National Fuel’s Western New York service territory. For information or to register contact the NEED Project’s NYS Office 1-866-720-2123 or email@example.comEnergy Detectives Teacher Training Workshop Schedule:
