Thomas Vanek is making sure that children at the Boys and Girls Club of Buffalo kick off their summer right.

The Buffalo Sabres forward donated more than 100 pairs of New Balance sneakers to participants who completed the Hat Trick For Health program on Thursday afternoon.

Highlighting good eating habits and exercise, the program was designed to teach fun ways of incorporating fitness into their daily lives. Each child kept a scoreboard during the eight-week period, logging their activities and experiences.

Vanek launched the program in November, announcing a new partnership between the Buffalo Sabres, BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo for children who participate in the afterschool programming at each of the neighborhood clubhouses.

Sabretooth was on-hand to help deliver the sneakers.

“[The point was] to have kids interact through healthy habits – teaching them about teamwork, sportsmanship and just being healthy,” Assistant Director of Program Operations Robert Lowery.

Part of the program included learning the basics of hockey and practicing drills. Vanek donated equipment to the clubs to help the children practice the game.
