Buffalo Sabres co-captain Daniel Briere was awarded a one-year contract worth $5 million by an arbitrator on Sunday afternoon.

Buffalo has until 48 hours after their last hearing - Adam Mair on Friday, August 4th - to accept or decline any arbitration ruling.

If the team declines, Briere will become an unrestricted free agent.

The 28-year-old center recorded 58 points (25+33) in 48 games for the Sabres during the 2005-06 season. Briere led all Buffalo scorers with 19 points (8+11) in 18 games during the playoffs.

Buffalo acquired the Gatineau, Quebec native along with a third-round pick from Phoenix in exchange for Chris Gratton and a fourth-round selection on March 11, 2003.
