I have three notes for you.
* First off, I was surprised Jarrko Ruutu was suspended two games for biting Andrew Peters
, but good for the league. It’s not only bush league to bite someone in competition, it’s also embarrassing for the NHL.
The casual sports fan had to be thinking what is going on with NHL players, they refer to former girlfriends ( see Sean Avery ) crudely and bite each other. For a league that gets hammered for getting things, they got this one right.
* As for something we all thought the league got wrong - the sucker punch to Patrick Kaleta
by Dennis Gauthier.
Your response to my blog about the lack of response from the NHL was overwhelming; Outrage that there was no punishment or supplemental discipline as the league calls it.
Here is some good news. A League source has informed me that Gauthier was indeed disciplined. He was fined $2,500. Before you say, "that’s all?", remember limits are set under the CBA.
The disappointing part is that I, and now everyone, had to find out through the grapevine. This should have been announced through a press release, so players know the consequences.
* Finally, Don Sanderson lost his battle. He is the Senior A league player in Ontario that hit his head on the ice during a fight that left him in a coma. His death has and will ingnite the debate on whether or not fighting should be banned in the NHL. I honestly don’t know how to feel now. I enjoy the spectacle and entertainment of the fights in the NHL, but am taken aback that someone lost his life over a fight in a hockey game no matter what level of play.
As always, send me your thoughts. Kevin Sylvester
