Steve Bernier addressed the media via conference call today following the announcement that he was acquired by the Buffalo Sabres from the San Jose Sharks. With Bernier the Sabres also acquired the Sharks' first-round selection in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for defenseman Brian Campbell and the Sabres' 2008 seventh-round selection.
Q: What was your reaction to the deal and coming to Buffalo?
"At first I was surprised, but right now I know that I feel good. I’m very excited to be going to Buffalo and I know they have very good young players and it’s a good thing and exciting for me right now."
Q: Describe your game, how you play and how you think you can help this team?
"My game is simple. What I’m doing is trying to create space for my linemates, be in front of the net as much as possible, hit and keep the tempo. That’s what I want to do."
Q: Have you watched the Sabres this year, and what do you think of the team?
"We played against them once and it was a very very fast game. [There is] a lot of talent and I’m very very excited right now to [play on] a young good team."
Q: Did you have any idea a trade was coming?
"No, that’s why I said I was surprised. I woke up going into the same routine I used to do, go eat breakfast, and Doug Wilson said ‘I need to talk to you.’ I was surprised but at the same time stuff happens for something and I hope it’s going to be good."
Do you know anyone on the Sabres?
"I played against [Jason] Pominville in junior and played against Derek Roy
one time on Team Canada. Those are the two guys I know."
Q: How much pressure is there knowing that you came here for a player like Brian Campbell?
"I know Campbell is pretty much the best defenseman in the league… It’s going to be tough but I’m young right now, I’ve got a lot of work to do to become a good player and I’m happy to do it with the Sabres. I’m going to work hard and try to be as good as possible to make sure that trade is going to be a good trade for the Sabres."
