Sharpen Up: September 30, 2016

by Chris Ryndak @ChrisRyndak /

Happy Friday. Happy National Hot Mulled Cider Day. The Sabres beat the Maple Leafs last night and the two clubs are back at it tonight. Here's what you need to know.

What Happened Last Night?

To say there wasn't a whole lot of offense in last night's game is an understatement, but the puck went in for Buffalo when it mattered most. Matt Moulson sealed the deal in the bottom of the fourth round of the shootout to give Buffalo a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in St. Catharines, Ont. last night.

If you click the play button, you can see what the goal looked like.

If you click these words, you can see what Jourdon LaBarber's game recap looks like. He was live on the scene at Meridian Centre.

Anders Nilsson was once again solid between the pipes, making 23 saves to earn the shutout. Through five periods of preseason play, Nilsson has stopped 49 of 50 shots for a .098 save percentage.

What did Dan Bylsma think of the performance?

Let's check out what Moulson has to say:

What's it like to play against your brother in a professional hockey game? We asked Buffalo's top pick in this year's draft Alexander Nylander to sum up the experience of facing off against his older brother William, who plays for Toronto.

On Tap Today

The home-and-home series concludes with Buffalo and Toronto at KeyBank Center tonight (Buffalo's final three preseason games will be played on the road). We hope you'll join us, but if you can't, the game will be on MSG and a lot of familiar faces will on your screen because the gang's back together.

Rick Jeanneret, Roby Ray, Dan Dunleavy, Brad May and Brian Duff will be here to set you up for the game, starting with the Tops Gamenight pregame show at 6:30 p.m. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and stick with us for the postgame show once the final horn sounds. The game can also be heard on WGR 550.

We'll have lineup news for you after the morning skate at 10 a.m. with a written report by el LaBarber and a video preview from Duffer and our talented videographers.

And after the game, we'll have written and video recaps as well as locker room interviews.

Well Look Who It Is

Tweet from @BuffaloSabres: Restricted free agent Rasmus Ristolainen wanted to skate with the team & received permission to do so.On the ice now. #RR55
Restricted free agent Rasmus Ristolainen remains unsigned, but practiced with the team yesterday for the first time this training camp. While contract negotiations are ongoing between general manager Tim Murray and Ristolainen's agent, they came to an agreement that allows the defenseman to work out with the team in the meantime. Ristolainen did not speak with the media after practice.

Congrats to Ryan O'Reilly, World Cup Champion

The World Cup of Hockey is (finally) over and Team Canada won the title in dramatic fashion. Two late third-period goals, including the shorthanded game-winner by Brad Marchand, lifted the host country 2-1 over Europe as they swept the best-of-three final.

O'Reilly, who centered Canada's fourth line with Joe Thornton and Matt Duchene - that's some fourth line, eh? - should be reporting to Sabres camp within in the next few days.

It (finally) will be tomorrow. Buffalo has practice in the morning so come back to for full coverage once it wraps up. Sharpen Up will return on Monday. Don't miss us too much.
