Sharpen Up: October 7, 2016

by Chris Ryndak @ChrisRyndak /

The preseason ends tonight. Buffalo and Ottawa will face off for the second time this preseason - this time at Canadian Tire Centre in OttawaOttawaOttawa. The Senators are down to 25 players on their roster, so they're pretty close to their regular-season look.

It's a radio only game with Dan Dunleavy and Rob Ray on the call. Tune into WGR 550 at 7:30 p.m. for all the action.

Here's what you need to know.

Medical Report

The Sabres are dealing with injuries to a few of their top contributors.

Ryan O'Reilly is day-to-day after having a muscle spasm in his back and mid-section during Wednesday night's game in Sault Ste. Marie and will not play tonight as a precaution.

Kyle Okposo has a bruised knee after being hit with a shot in practice on Monday. Bylsma says he has gotten better each day, but did not set a timetable for his return the ice.

Zach Bogosian, who is dealing with a strained groin, has been skating on his own and is progressing.

Bylsma on Dmitry Kulikov, who fell into an open bench door during Buffalo's preseason game last week Friday:

"I don't like talking about the bruised butt that he has, but he's progressing as well."

Video: BYLSMA: After Practice

Bylsma expects Kulikov to skate with the team this morning. He also expects defenseman Tyson Strachan, who is on an AHL deal with the Amerks, to be on the ice today as well.

For a more detailed report of Wednesday's practice and a few other injury notes, Jourdon LaBarnBurner has that for you in the Ice Level Practice Report.

After tonight, the Sabres don't play again until opening night on Thursday, so Bylsma hopes that time off will work to his players' benefit when it comes to recovery.

The Hopefuls

However, those injuries have allowed some other players to play a bigger role this preseason, including Justin Falk, Brendan Guhle and Alexander Nylander. Brian Duff talked to those players about what's going through their minds as they battle for a spot on the NHL roster.
