Sharpen Up: October 24, 2016

The Sabres had a relatively quiet weekend with only a practice on Sunday as they head into a four-games-in-six-days stretch. That will start tomorrow night when they head to Philadelphia for a 7:30 p.m. tilt against the Flyers on NBCSN.

All of the action was in Rochester, where the Amerks, bolstered by a few call-ups, won both of their games over the weekend.

Here's what you need to know.

Hudson Fasching and Casey Nelson may have had a little bit of rust to shake off heading into those Amerks games on Friday - the first taste of AHL action in their young careers. Nelson hadn't played since the opener and Fasching sat out the last two games as a healthy scratch.

They, along with Nicholas Baptiste, were sent down to Rochester on Friday in order to get a few more games in while the Sabres were off.

Come Sunday morning, Fasching and Nelson were back at an NHL practice, having earned the recall. Each scored in Friday's game. At the conclusion of the weekend, Fasching recorded three shots on goal through two games, while Nelson doubled him up with six.

Jourdon LaBarber has the story on what they hope to come away with from the experience

We'll have even more on Rochester's weekend in tomorrow's weekly Amerks Update.

Fresh looks

Buffalo also made some adjustments to their line combinations on Sunday. Sam Reinhart is back in the middle and Matt Moulson's play has earned him a spot on the top line with Ryan O'Reilly and Kyle Okposo.

Moulson and Okposo had some chemistry when both were with the Islanders from 2009-13. Through four games, Moulson has a pair of goals and in every contest, has been generating chances from in and around the crease.

These were the lines yesterday:

26 Matt Moulson - 90 Ryan O'Reilly - 21 Kyle Okposo
63 Tyler Ennis - 23 Sam Reinhart - 28 Zemgus Girgensons
82 Marcus Foligno - 22 Johan Larsson - 12 Brian Gionta
44 Nicolas Deslauriers - 27 Derek Grant - 52 Hudson Fasching

The team is battling some illness right now. Sabres coach Dan Bylsma estimates four or five players are dealing with something so we'll see if that affects today's practice attendance at all.
