Sharpen Up: March 13, 2017

by Chris Ryndak @ChrisRyndak /

The Sabres found themselves down 3-0 to the Columbus Blue Jackets after the first period on Saturday and things were not looking up. They'd earned just one point over their last four games, were 1-5-2 since coming out of the bye week and had lost eight of their last nine. They had dropped a game to Columbus the night before on a late goal in the third.

However, they were able to rally back on Saturday, scoring five unanswered goals to come back and win on home ice.

Here's what you need to know.

A look back at Saturday

Robin Lehner entered the game in relief to start the second period and was brilliant between the pipes, making 24 saves through the final 40 minutes of play.

Jake McCabe, Sam Reinhart and Matt Moulson all scored for Buffalo before Evander Kane potted the winner on the power play with 2:29 left in the third. Jack Eichel then added an empty netter for his 19th goal of the season.

McCabe has a point in each of his last two games against Columbus and six points (2+4) in his last eight games overall.

Moulson has 10 power-play goals this season. It's the second-highest total of his career and the most he's had since 2011-12 (14).

That type of comeback doesn't happen very often either:

The victory was the Sabres' first regulation win in a game in which they trailed by three or more goals since Dec. 29, 2009 vs. Pittsburgh (4-3 win). With the last five goals tonight, the Sabres scored five or more unanswered goals for the first time since Dec. 26, 2015 at Boston (6-3 win).

From the game recap

 Video: MCCABE: Postgame

"We just came in the first intermission, a couple guys spoke up a little bit," McCabe said. "We knew what we had to do and went out and executed it."

The game certainly seemed liked a statement by the Sabres, yet another example of what the young team is capable of when they strike consistency. It was also the latest comeback in a season full of them for a team that never seems to count itself out.

"I just think we came out as a new team again and just had a good period," Lehner said. "That's what we preached and tried to talk about all year, tried to make it more consistent. We've showed against good teams all year long that we can play with them. I think no matter what, you look in the standings or what not, the whole year we've been in games.

"We didn't' give up," he continued. "We're not going to give up on the season either."
