On Tuesday, several of the Sabres Significant Others, along with Sabretooth, visited the Ronald McDonald House of Western New York to cook lunch for the residents as part of the “Cooks for Kids” program that the House has set up.  Participating in the program were:  Kim Pominville, Alyssa McCormick, Janine Fanelli (Mike Weber’s fiancé) and Jess Niedermayer.  They made various dishes that included chicken tacos, chicken wing dip, Rice Krispy treats, a vegetable salad and a fruit salad.

All of the food was donated by the Buffalo Sabres Foundation.  The Foundation also left some Sabres merchandise for the guests to enjoy.

Founded in 1983, The Ronald McDonald House is a community-supported charitable organization that is dedicated to children and their families.  It’s purpose is to offer “a ‘home away from home’ by providing lodging and emotional support for families of children receiving medical treatment.”  The organization also reaches out “to our community by supporting programs that benefit children.”  Families of children receiving medical treatment can stay at a Ronald McDonald House for a low cost for the entirety of the child’s hospital stay.

The “Cooks for Kids” program coordinates with civic groups, companies, scout troops, youth groups and groups of friends to regularly provide meals at the Ronald McDonald House.  The groups not only prepare the meals, they also plan the menus, shop for the items, and often times bake goodies for the families.  Cooks must be at least 14 years of age and supervised by an adult at all times.

“Cooks for Kids is a great program for the Sabres Significant Others to get involved with,” said Sabres Community Relations Coordinator Teresa Belbas.  “The families staying at the house really appreciate a home-cooked meal when they get back from a long day at the hospital.  I know the girls really enjoyed cooking the meal and the Sabres Foundation is proud to support a program such as this.”
