With his 23rd score of the season Thomas Vanek may have added to his league-leading goal total --  but that is hardly the reason this one was so memorable.

Opening the scoring Saturday night in New Jersey, Vanek forever cemented himself in Buffalo Sabres trivia – netting the franchise’s 10,000th goal.

In the first minute of play, Jochen Hecht took the puck from behind the net and shoveled a backhand into the paint. Collecting his own rebound, Hecht again took a shot with Vanek regaining control and jamming it behind Devils’ netminder Kevin Weekes.

The goal was Vanek’s fifth score in five games. Hecht and Jason Pominville were credited with the assists.

The Sabres entered the 2008-09 campaign with 9,920 scores, tallying 79 more on the year entering tonight’s match-up.

Only 10 other teams have scored more goals all-time in the NHL.
