Head Coach Lindy Ruff reported today that netminder Jhonas Enroth has been reassigned to the American Hockey League’s Portland Pirates.

Enroth was acting as the Sabres third goaltender in training camp with Patrick Lalime recovering from a groin injury.

“Patty felt well after practice yesterday and we need him to get a full workout, so Jhonas is on his way back down,” Ruff said.

Ruff also announced that Matt Ellis has officially cleared waivers and will join Enroth in Portland. The moves bring Buffalo to a 23-man roster as they prepare for Friday’s season opener in Ottawa – and the coach is happy with his team’s progress.

“I think what you feel good about is the fact that we’re healthy,” Ruff said. “We’re coming out of training camp and we didn’t lose any bodies. We had a couple of guys banged up but it looks like everybody should be ready to play.”

Both Thomas Vanek (head/neck) and Craig Rivet (throat) participated in Wednesday’s skate and ‘have a good chance’ of being ready in time to take on the Senators.

Rivet practiced with defenseman Mike Weber for the second day in row while Vanek joined Jochen Hecht, Jason Pominville and Tim Connolly on a four-man unit.

The remaining lines consisted of Derek Roy centering Drew Stafford and Tyler Ennis, Nathan Gerbe between Mike Grier and Rob Niedermayer and Patrick Kaleta alongside Cody McCormick and Paul Gaustad.

The defense pairings were also the same for the second consecutive day with Tyler Myers playing with Shaone Morrisonn, Jordan Leopold with Steve Montador and Chris Butler alongside Andrej Sekera.

Ruff has not conceded who will be the odd men out for Buffalo’s season debut, but could have a definitive answer as soon as tomorrow. The Sabres will skate Thursday afternoon at the Northtown Plaza in Amherst before flying to Ottawa.
