Cody Hodgson remains hot at the 2014 IIHF World Championships in Minsk, Belarus.

After scoring a hat trick for Team Canada on Thursday, the Buffalo Sabres forward netted a pair of goals in the Canadians’ 6-1 win over Italy on Friday.

Canada jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two periods with Hodgson scoring both of his goals in the second period. He and Viktor Tikhonov of Russia are currently tied for the tournament lead in goals with six each.

James Reimer made 21 saves in the game for Canada. Brayden Schenn (1+1), Joel Ward (1+1) and Nathan MacKinnon (0+2) also had multi-point efforts.

Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers, who is also playing for Canada skated a game-high 22:30.

The United States’ game against Kazakhstan on Friday had to be settled in overtime. Nashville Predators rookie Seth Jones potted the winner 1:05 into the extra period to give the Americans a 4-3 victory. It was Jones’ second goal of the game.

The United States battled back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits before taking a 3-2 lead on a goal from Matt Donovan 4:58 to play in the second period.

Sabres defenseman Jake McCabe skated 11:28 for the Americans.

Coming off a thrilling upset of the U.S. on Thursday, Team Latvia went into their game against Russia on Saturday looking to inch closer to first place in Group B.

Latvia took a 1-0 lead 7:30 into the contest, but Russia stormed back with three goals in the first and another midway through the second to win 4-1. Tikhonov recorded two goals and an assist for Russia while Kristers Guzlevskis made 39 saves for Team Latvia.

Sabres center Zemgus Girgensons played only 8:24. He was given a five-minute major for spearing and a game misconduct shortly after Russia scored its fourth goal of the game. He speared Russian forward Alexander Burmistrov between the legs after a faceoff in the offensive zone and was sent off for the remainder of the game.

Russia is currently undefeated in the tournament and has outscored its opponents 26-6.

Next up for the Sabres in the tournament:

Team USA plays Finalnd on Sunday while Team Canada takes on Finland for first place in Group A. Latvia is off until Monday when they’ll face Belarus.

The preliminary round wraps up on Tuesday. The quarterfinals begin on Thursday.
