For the members of the Buffalo Sabres participating in the IIHF World Championships in Belarus, their chances at winning a medal have come to an end.

Zemgus Girgensons, Ted Nolan and Team Latvia did not qualify for the playoff round and both Team Canada – featuring Cody Hodgson and Tyler Myers – and Jake McCabe’s Team USA were eliminated in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

In the early game, the Czech Republic ended the hopes of the U.S. with a 4-3 victory. The Americans fell into a 4-1 hole by the end of the second and two late third-period goals from Tyler Johnson brought the U.S. back into the game.

However, the Czech Republic was able to hang on and will now face Finland in the semifinals on Saturday.

McCabe logged 1:39 of ice time on two shifts.

Later in the day, Team Canada was eliminated from the tournament by Finland. The Canadians held a 2-1 lead late in the second period, but two goals by the Finns in the third period helped their cause to advance in the tournament.

Iiro Pakarinen scored the game-winner with 3:08 remaining in regulation to clinch the 3-2 victory.

It’s the fifth year in a row that the Canadians have been bounced in the quarterfinals.

Hodgson finished the tournament with six goals and eight points.
