Herb Brooks, the coach of the gold medal winning 1980 United States Men’s Ice Hockey Team, once said, “Great moments are born from great opportunity.” Over the weekend of March 26-28, 2010, the Hamburg Islanders, representing the Squirt Division of the Hamburg Municipal Hockey Association, parlayed a slew of great moments and captured the opportunity to win the Squirt Pacific Division of the prestigious 34th Annual Pepsi Invitational Hockey Tournament held at Leisure and Holiday Twin Rinks.
Joe LoTempio and Matt Russo fed the puck to Hamburg’s Bryan Solinski who weaved through three Watertown players to score a dramatic overtime goal at 5:45 of the extra period to give the Islanders a 2-1 championship capturing victory over the vaunted Watertown Rapids in the tournament finale.
Solinski’s heroics capped a weekend of tremendous hockey and family support that witnessed the “Orange Crush” display a year’s worth of hockey acumen developed through the HMHA’s hockey instruction. Seemingly, each player contributed a significant amount in helping each other capture the crown.
Islanders’ coach Ben Honrquist beamed, “I’d like to thank all the players and their families for all their support all season long. We could not have achieved what we did this season without them.”
