Mike Grier was absent from practice Thursday afternoon as the Buffalo Sabres completed a 30-minute workout at the Amherst Pepsi Center.

The winger missed the last 12 minutes of Wednesday night’s 3-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers with a groin strain and Head Coach Lindy Ruff said he still felt a little sore.

“We don’t anticipate it being too long but he could miss a little bit of time,” Ruff said. “He could, but I mean there’s still a chance he could play tomorrow too.”

With Grier out, Pat Kaleta practiced alongside Tim Kennedy and Jochen Hecht. Adam Mair practiced on the fourth line with Paul Gaustad and Matt Ellis.

“We’re putting in exactly what left that spot, really,” Ruff said. “I think Patty is very capably, with his skating ability of playing in that role.”

Patrick Lalime will be back in the lineup Friday night as Buffalo hosts the Calgary Flames. The netminder has been out since Nov. 2 after suffering a groin strain during practice.

“Patty feels good. He got a full practice in and he’ll be backing Ryan up tomorrow,” Ruff said.

Jhonas Enroth was, in turn, reassigned to the AHL Portland Pirates.

Toni Lydman [groin] also participated in the skate Thursday. Ruff said the defenseman is progressing.
