COLUMBUS – With the first pick of the 16th round of the 2015 NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft presented by DraftKings, Team Foligno selected Buffalo Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons.

With 18 rounds in the draft, Girgensons had to wait backstage for almost 90 minutes to hear his name called.

“It was fun and at the same time, a little long to get picked. To get picked that late, it was a long TV show, pretty much,” he told

The team captains seemed to be having a blast onstage while making the picks and Girgensons said that translated over backstage while he and others waited to be selected.

“It was a loose atmosphere the whole time,” he said.

He’ll receive word Saturday on what he’ll be doing in the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition that night (NBCSN, 7 p.m.). Girgensons likely isn’t going to try and get too fancy in the events he’s chosen to take part in.

“I’ll just see what I have to do and do it – and not mess up,” he said.

With their next pick, team captain Nick Foligno and alternate captains Patrick Kane and Drew Doughty only selected three-time Hart Trophy Winner Alex Ovechkin, who was banking on winning a new car.

The 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game will be played at Nationwide Arena on Sunday at 5 p.m. on NBCSN.
