Location and the holding a sole affiliation in the AHL may not be the only things changing when the Buffalo Sabres and Portland Pirates kick off the 2008-09 season together.

A pivotal piece in the Sabres development program may be absent as well.

General manager Darcy Regier said Monday during a press conference that long time minor league head coach Randy Cunneyworth’s return could be in doubt for next season.

The reason for Cunneyworth’s possible departure?  Well, it wasn’t from the Sabres lack of interest.

“We would love to have Randy back,” said Sabres general manager Darcy Regier.  “He’s gotten some interest as an assistant coach in the National Hockey League, so we’ll wait on that decision.

“He is well aware that we would love to have him in Portland.  We will wait on him.”

Cunneyworth traveled with the team’s scouting staff to attend the 2008 NHL Entry Draft last weekend in Ottawa, Ont.   He sat at the Sabres table and met each draftee as he was selected.

Cunneyworth's contract with Buffalo will expire at the end of August.
