NASHVILLE - Phil Housley knows the impact that the home crowd at Bridgestone Arena can have on a game as well as anyone. On Saturday, he'll experience that raucous atmosphere for the first time as a visiting coach.
Housley, who began his NHL coaching career as an assistant with the Nashville Predators for the past four seasons, will make his first return to Music City as head coach of the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.

"It's a tough building to win in, number one," Housley said. "These guys play very hard, they get the boost from the people in the stands. They provide a lot of energy. So that's going to be one thing we try to take away, is the noise, and try to play a good, sound game early.
"It's going to be good for these guys, especially the younger players, to experience something like this."

In 2013-14, Housley's first season behind the bench with Nashville, the Predators finished with 88 points and missed the playoffs. They took a step in each of the next three seasons, from cracking the first round in 2014-15 and then the second round in 2015-16.
Last season, the Predators went all the way to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final before falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Having been a part of that ascension, it's natural to expect an emotional return for Housley.
At the same time, he said he's focused on the task at hand.
"We're going to try to win a hockey game against a really good opponent," he said. "They're one of the best in the league, so everything's going to have to go right for us but we've played some good hockey against good teams. It will sink in a little bit, but we're going to be focused on trying to win this game tonight."
The Predators lead the NHL with 111 points this season and have won 16 of their last 20 games. When the two teams met in Buffalo on March 19, the Sabres came away with the advantage in the shot column, 35-32, but lost 4-0.
The Sabres generally felt good about the way they competed in that game, and a pair of late goals by the Predators made the score more lopsided than the play actually was. Still, they were unable to solve All-Star goalie Pekka Rinne, in part because they didn't put enough pressure at the net front.
"It's just finishing," Housley said. "We threw a lot of rubber at the net but we didn't get the second opportunity. We've got to stop at the net, we've got to pay a price to score. That's what we've been preaching to our guys. I think we've done a better job of it."

Chad Johnson will start in net for the Sabres. He'll be backed up by Adam Wilcox, who joined the team on Friday with both Robin Lehner and Linus Ullmark dealing with injuries.
Coverage on MSG-B begins at 7:30 p.m., or you can listen live on WGR 550. Puck drop is scheduled for 8.

Encore for Mittelstadt

It will be career game No. 2 for rookie Casey Mittelstadt, and his first on the road. Mittelstadt made his NHL debut against Detroit on Thursday, scoring an assist in 12:53 of ice time. Housley said he would have played more had it not been for the amount of time the Sabres spent shorthanded.
"It's going to be a great challenge because he's going to be facing some really great centermen," Housley said. "We're not going to get the last change, obviously, but I think it's just part of his growth, these last games, to experience what really good teams do, how they play.
"It's going to be one of those things that is probably going to be eye-popping for him."
The Predators' depth down the middle includes Ryan Johansen, Kyle Turris, Nick Bonino and Mike Fisher.
"It's definitely a new challenge," Mittelstadt said. "I think obviously, like I said before, I'm here to learn so this will definitely be a good learning test for me to play against three or four of the best centers in the league. It will definitely be a tough night, a good test for myself."
The Predators will have a highly-touted prospect in their lineup as well, with Eeli Tolvanen set to make his NHL debut on a line with Johansen and Victor Arvidsson. Tolvanen was selected by Nashville with the 30th pick in last year's draft.
