Derek Roy is rapidly becoming the Buffalo Sabres' go-to guy this season - especially when it counts.
The centerman netted his third overtime tally of the season in Thursday's 2-1 contest in Atlanta to seal the win. The goal put him on top of the League in that category, and bumped him to eighth overall with five game-winning goals.
"Derek's scoring when this team needs him the most," Tim Kennedy said. "It's huge. Those goals count more than a point you score in a 6-2, or 6-1 game. His goals have been huge and he's been stepping up this year."
The trend is nothing new. Last season Roy scored nine game-winning goals to lead the team, four more than second-ranked Tim Connolly. He has scored the game-winning goal a total of 26 times in his NHL career.
"When the team is down a goal or when we need something to happen, the team looks to him to get things going and he has really answered the call," Kennedy said.
