What happened

Buffalo outshot New York 16-6 in the first period, but the Rangers scored on their second shot of the second period to open the scoring.
Smith stepped into a one-timer from the point shot beat Luukkonen top shelf at the 2:22 mark of the second period to put New York ahead.
Reinhart tied the game with 3.2 seconds remaining in the second period with his power-play marker. He kept the play alive at the Rangers blue line and then rifled in a shot after a quick give-and-go with Casey Mittelstadt.
New York took the lead with 9:49 remaining in the third. On the forecheck, Ryan Strome won a battle behind the Sabres net and fed Lafrenière in front.
Then with 6:11 left, Zibanejad, coming off a hat trick on Sunday, capitalized with the man advantage to make it 3-1. Buffalo was down two men for an extended period of time and Zibanejad's goal came after Buffalo had killed off the first penalty.
