20220330 Girgensons Final Horn Mediawall 01

The Buffalo Sabres needed another game to go past regulation to determine a winner.
This time, their game against the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday went to a shoototut where Winnipeg came out on top 3-2 at KeyBank Center.
Six of the Sabres' past seven games have gone into overtime.
Zemgus Girgensons scored twice while Craig Anderson made 25 saves. Girgensons recorded his first two-goal outing since Nov. 24, 2019 at Florida.
Blake Wheeler scored in regulation and also added the shootout-deciding goal. Mason Appleton scored as well. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 35 shots.
Buffalo's power play was 0-for-2, including a full 4-on-3 opportunity in overtime that the club could not covert on. The team was 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
The Sabres did extend their point streak to seven games (4-0-3) and finish the month of March with a record of 8-3-3.

How it happened

WPG@BUF: Girgensons sticks with to bury his rebound

Girgensons got Buffalo on the board 5:21 into the game when he had a shot blocked and immediately potted the rebound that came right back to him.
Winnipeg came back early in the second period on a goal by Wheeler 4:13 into the second period.
Girgensons scored again for his 10th of the season when he potted a loose puck into a gaping net at the 8:24 mark of the second.
But with just 21 seconds remaining in the middle frame, the Jets tied things up again when Appleton wired a shot in.
In overtime, Tage Thompson drew a slashing penalty as he cut in on goal for a great chance, putting Buffalo on the power play 35 seconds into the extra period. Buffalo held possession in the offensive zone for an extended period of time, but couldn't capitalize. Shots in overtime were 6-1 in favor of the Sabres.
In the shootout, Victor Olofsson and Alex Tuch scored in the shootout while Thompson was denied. The Jets, however, went 3-for-3 on goals from Pierre-Luc Dubois, Mark Scheifele and Wheeler.
