In front of the largest crowd since the 2014-15 season when 10,641 packed The Blue Cross Arena, the Rochester Americans (25-10-5-5) returned home following the AHL All-Star break as they hosted the league-leading Toronto Marlies (33-11-0-1) on Hometown Heroes Night. A crowd of 9,836 was on hand to witness one of the most-highly anticipated games of the season despite the Amerks dropping a 4-2 decision to the Marlies.
Despite the loss, the Amerks have earned points in 31 of their last 37 games dating back to Nov. 1 and suffered their first regulation loss at The Blue Cross since Dec. 30 as they show a record of 3-1-0-1 during that span.
Rochester native and 39-year-old veteran Brian Gionta scored his first goal as an Amerk in his debut in the red, white and blue after signing a one-game professional tryout earlier in the week while Arvin Atwal booked his first-career AHL tally for Rochester. Goaltender Linus Ullmark made 27 saves but took the loss. The Swedish netminder has gone winless gone in his last six outings.
Andreas Johnsson grabbed a hold of the Marlies scoring lead on the campaign as he netted his second straight three-point (1-2) outing while Miro Aaltonen collected a two-point (1+1) effort in the win. Richard Clune and Vincent LoVerde capped off the scoring while Garrett Sparks, who was recently named CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month, extended his win streak to seven games as the Illinois native stopped 26 of 28 shots he faced.

Despite scoring twice in the third period to fight their way back from a two-goal deficit, the Rochester Americans (25-11-6-5) were unable to complete the comeback against the Binghamton Devils (13-23-6-3), who scored just 34 seconds into overtime to hand the Amerks a 4-3 loss Saturday at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. Of Rochester's 47 games this season, 20 have seen the Amerks play beyond regulation.
Eight different Amerks tallied one point on the evening, with Kevin Porter and Sahir Gill each scoring their 13th goals of the season. Matt Tennyson also netted his first goal as an Amerk to spark the third-period rally and round out the scoring for Rochester, marking his first goal since Nov. 11 of last season. Adam Wilcox stopped 31 of the 35 shots he faced in the overtime loss, which halted a three-game win streak but extended his personal point streak to a season-long four straight games, going 3-0-1 over that span.
Blake Pietila tallied his first three-point night of the season, notching one goal and two assists to lead the hometown Devils, while 2018 AHL All-Star selection Jacob MacDonald scored his third game-winning goal of the year behind a 27-save effort from goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. The netminder would also earn an assist on Binghamton's first goal of the game.
