DETROIT – As part of the 12th Annual Smoke Detector Collection, the Detroit Red Wings and captain Henrik Zetterberg are asking fans to bring smoke detectors to Joe Louis Arena when the Wings face off against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and again on Friday, Sept. 27, against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Those who do not bring smoke detectors may also make monetary donations.
Volunteers from local area fire departments and Comerica will be on hand to help with the collection of the detectors. All detectors collected will be given to low-income and elderly households throughout the state of Michigan. Fans who bring a smoke detector or make a monetary donation will be entered to win a post-game zamboni ride that day.
This is Zetterberg’s seventh year as spokesman for the Smoke Detector Collection. Zetterberg will personally match all smoke detector and monetary donations up to $15,000. Last year’s program distributed over 3,600 detectors, with the majority of those going to the Detroit, Saginaw and Flint areas.
The collection was originally created in 2001 by Brendan Shanahan to honor the memory of his father, who was a firefighter. Since the program’s inception, more than 23,000 detectors have been donated to fire departments throughout the state of Michigan.
