Wings trio add Hockeytown feel to Buick

by Bill Roose / Detroit Red Wings
DETROIT -- Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, and forwards Dan Cleary and Kirk Maltby will participate in Wednesday's Pure Michigan Pro-Am, which marks the start of the final Buick Open at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Michigan this weekend.

Cleary and Maltby are scheduled to begin at 7:20 a.m. on the 10th tee with golf pro Brad Faxon and amateurs Ethan Chamberlin and Bill Waldman. Holland and Olympia Entertainment president Dana Warg are partnered with pro Rory Sabbatini and amateurs Joe Marini and Jason Langwell. Their fivesome is scheduled to head off at 8:20 a.m. from the first tee.

Cleary's new and improved golf game will be on display for what is expected to be a pretty good crowd at Warwick Hills. Though he's never participated in a pro-am, Cleary, who recently joined Oakland Hills Country Club, says he's lowered his handicap from about a 12 last summer to right around a 9-handicap now.

"I'm very excited about playing in the Buick Open Pro Am," Cleary said. "Never played in one before. Hopefully nerves won't play a factor. Look forward to playing with a legend in Brad Faxon and asking him some pointers in putting."

Faxon who has won eight PGA Tour events, captured his first official tournament championship at the 1991Buick Open when he defeated Chip Beck in a playoff.

Knee problems have hampered Faxon since 2003. He underwent ACL and microfracture surgery on his right knee in December 2007, and missed much of the 2008 tour. This season,  Faxon, 47, has made only three cuts in 16 events. His last tour win came in 2005.

In Holland's foursome is Sabbatini, the 2009 Byron Nelson Championship winner, who beat Brian Davis by two-strokes when he fired a 19-under at the TPC Four Seasons Resort in Irving, Texas in May. The Nelson victory was Sabbatini's five tour win since 2000.

Other celebrities expect to play in Wednesday's pro-am include players from the Detroit Lions and Detroit Pistons, as well as rock legend Bob Seger, who is paired with the world's No. 1-ranked golfer, Tiger Woods. The pair will be the first group off the tee at 7 a.m.

Buick Open officials said unlike on tournament days, fans are encouraged to bring their cameras to take pictures of their favorite celebrities and golfers on Wedensday.
