by Christy Hammond / Detroit Red Wings
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings will host their annual Military Appreciation Night this Friday, Nov. 11, when the team takes on the Edmonton Oilers at 7:30 p.m. on Veterans/Remembrance Day (FOX Sports Detroit and 97.1 The Ticket). All fans attending Friday’s game will receive a dog tag featuring the U.S. and Canadian flags at any of the giveaway locations throughout the arena.

Volunteers from Blue Star Mothers of America Chapter 180 will be on hand to collect care package items and monetary donations at each entrance of Joe Louis Arena when the doors open at 6:00 p.m. For each item or cash donation to Blue Star Mothers of America, fans will receive a raffle ticket and be entered to win an autographed Justin Abdelkader jersey.

Blue Star Mothers of America will include all items collected on Friday when they pack the care package boxes the following week and then ship them to soldiers currently serving overseas. All monetary donations from Friday’s game will help cover the cost of shipping these care packages.

Items range from autographed, game-used sticks of Dominik Hasek and Brad May to autographed Marian Hossa jerseys to signed pucks and photos of former players. All of the proceeds raised from the fire sale will benefit the Operation USO Care Package program. For every $25 brought in, USO can send a care package to a soldier currently serving overseas.

Fans are also encouraged to sign an eight-foot-wide banner behind Section 112 on the concourse Friday night. The banner has already been signed by the entire 2011-12 team and reads “The Detroit Red Wings Support Our Troops.” The Wings will send the team-signed and fan-signed banner to a 300-person unit out of Selfridge Air National Guard Base currently serving overseas in Afghanistan.
