DETROIT – The Red Wings have signed free agent forward Ilari Filppula to a one-year, two-way contract. Filppula is the 28-year-old brother of Red Wings center Valtteri Filppula.
Ilari Filppula was the 2009-10 recipient of the Jari Kurri Trophy as the playoff MVP of the Finnish League. Filppula’s TPS Turku team won the league championship. He had two goals and 12 assists in 15 playoff games.
Considered to be one of the better players in Finland, Filppula is a versatile forward, who can also play center. He will compete for a spot on the Red Wings’ roster in training camp, and if he doesn’t make the line-up he’ll play for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League.
In eight seasons in the Finnish League, Filppula has compiled 60 goals and 127 assists in 375 career games. Last season, he reached career-highs for games played (58), assists (37) and points (49).
